About
A writing desk for student email
EduEmail is a small set of free tools for the emails students find awkward to write: asking for an extension, a meeting, a letter of recommendation or a place in a lab, and following up when nobody answers.
How it works
Every page is a static web page. The templates, checks and calendar files are produced by JavaScript running in your own browser, so the details you type are not uploaded and there is no account or database behind the site. Visits are counted with Cloudflare's cookie-free Web Analytics, which never sees what you enter. Once a page has loaded it keeps working offline.
One feature talks to another service, and only when you ask: the optional mail-server check in the academic email checker sends the domain name to Cloudflare's public DNS service. The privacy page has the details.
The tools
- Email to a professor: nine situations, a formal or neutral tone, a live preview and an etiquette checklist.
- Academic email checker: look up a domain in a public list of university domains, with look-alike warnings.
- Email tone checker: rule-based checks for greeting, sign-off, length, text-speak and demanding phrasing.
- Student email signature: rich-text and plain-text signatures, with the student ID left out by default.
- Recommendation letter request: the request email, a timeline from your deadline, reminders and an .ics file.
- Research position email: a short, personal cold email to a lab.
- Follow-up email: how long to wait, and a polite nudge.
- What is an .edu email?: a plain guide to academic addresses and the scams around them.
What this site doesn't do
EduEmail does not give out, sell or create .edu or any other school addresses. Academic addresses are issued by institutions to their own students and staff. The site is not affiliated with any school, university or email provider, and the templates are suggestions: your syllabus, your school's policies and your instructor's own preferences come first.
